Route choice for Big Bend Backcountry: Outer Mountain Loop sections from the Chisos side vs Chisos Basin entry with East Rim side mileage?
Asked Feb 128 views1 answer
Same permit day, two route ideas. Option A is Outer Mountain Loop sections from the Chisos side. Option B is Chisos Basin entry with East Rim side mileage. Current trail notes say: no major blowdown, just loose gravel in steep sections.. Any reason to favor one?

Pick the route that matches your weakest link, not your best day. If footing is the main risk, lean toward the option with simpler navigation and cleaner tread.
Either way, carry an offline map and double check junctions when you are tired.
