PermitSnag ("we," "our," or "us") operates the PermitSnag website (permitsnag.com). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our services.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Authentication provider information (Apple ID, Google account, or email magic link)
  • Account creation date

Trip and Permit Data

When you use our permit tracking features, we collect:

  • Permit preferences (parks, dates, party size, zones)
  • Alternate permit selections
  • Tracking preferences and notification settings
  • Outcome reports (whether you secured a permit)
  • Calendar sync preferences

Device and Technical Data

We automatically collect:

  • Device type and operating system
  • Push notification tokens (for sending alerts)
  • App version and usage statistics
  • IP address and approximate location (country/region level)
  • Browser type (for website visitors)

Payment Information

Payment processing is handled by Stripe. We do not store your credit card numbers or bank account information. We receive only:

  • Subscription status and expiration date
  • Transaction identifiers
  • Purchase history (subscription or a la carte permits)

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide our core service: Monitor permit availability and send you alerts when openings occur
  • Improve alert timing: Learn when you're most likely to respond to notifications
  • Suggest alternatives: Recommend similar permits based on your preferences
  • Calculate success odds: Provide probability estimates based on historical patterns
  • Sync your calendar: Add permit deadlines and trip dates to your calendar

Information Sharing

With Other Users (Permit Sharing)

When you share a trip with other users or participate in group applications, those users can see:

  • The permit and dates you're tracking
  • Current availability status
  • Your name or email (as trip owner or member)

You control who you share with. Observers can view status but cannot modify your trip.

With Service Providers

We share data with trusted third parties that help us operate:

  • Apple Push Notification Service (APNs): To deliver push notifications
  • Twilio: To send SMS alerts
  • Resend: To send email notifications
  • Railway: Cloud hosting provider
  • Analytics providers: To understand app usage (anonymized)

We Do Not Sell Your Data

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes. Period.

Third-Party Services

PermitSnag connects to government permit systems (Recreation.gov, California State Parks, Utah State Parks, BLM) to check availability. When you use our "Fast Lane" feature to book a permit, you are redirected to the official booking site. We do not control those sites and recommend reviewing their privacy policies.

SMS Messaging

When you provide your phone number and opt in to SMS alerts, you consent to receive text messages from PermitSnag regarding:

  • Permit availability alerts when openings are detected
  • Lottery application reminders and deadline notifications
  • Trip and calendar notifications
  • Account security messages (verification codes)

Message Frequency

Message frequency varies based on permit availability and your tracking preferences. You may receive 0-10 messages per week depending on your tracked permits and alert settings. High-demand permits during peak season may generate more frequent alerts.

Opt-Out Instructions

Reply STOP to any message to unsubscribe from all SMS alerts. You will receive a confirmation message and no further SMS messages will be sent. You can also disable SMS notifications in your account settings at any time.

Costs

Message and data rates may apply. PermitSnag does not charge for sending SMS alerts, but your mobile carrier may apply standard messaging rates. Check with your carrier for details about your messaging plan.

Phone Number Privacy

We do not sell, rent, or share your phone number with third parties for marketing purposes. Your phone number is only used to send you the alerts and notifications you have requested from PermitSnag. Phone numbers are stored securely and are never shared with advertisers or data brokers.

Supported Carriers

SMS alerts are supported by major US carriers including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and most other US wireless carriers. Carrier availability and message delivery are not guaranteed. PermitSnag is not responsible for delayed or undelivered messages due to carrier issues.

Data Retention

We retain your data as follows:

  • Account data: Until you delete your account
  • Trip data: Until 90 days after the trip end date, then automatically deleted
  • Historical outcome data: Anonymized and aggregated for service improvement
  • Payment records: As required by law (typically 7 years)

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your data: Request a copy of the personal information we hold
  • Correct your data: Update inaccurate information
  • Delete your data: Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Export your data: Receive your data in a portable format
  • Opt out of marketing: Unsubscribe from promotional emails

California Residents (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:

  • Right to know what personal information is collected

  • Right to say no to the sale of personal information (we don't sell it)
  • Right to equal service and price (we don't discriminate)

Children's Privacy

PermitSnag is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us immediately.

Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS/HTTPS)
  • Encryption at rest for sensitive data
  • Secure authentication via Apple/Google OAuth
  • Regular security audits

However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

International Users

PermitSnag is operated from the United States. If you access our services from outside the US, your information will be transferred to and processed in the US. By using PermitSnag, you consent to this transfer.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or through the app. Your continued use of PermitSnag after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
