What start time works best for Big Bend Backcountry in February?
Asked Feb 125 views1 answer
I have a Big Bend backcountry permit day in Big Bend and I am debating at first light versus later. Route is Chisos Basin entry with East Rim side mileage with a conservative pace. My main concerns are crowds and heat.

at first light is usually the move. Cooler temps and fewer bottlenecks give you room to adjust without burning extra water.
If you start later, be strict about breaks and turnaround time so you do not end up rushing the last stretch.
