Navigation tips for a Big Bend backcountry permit day on Big Bend Backcountry?

I have the permit and a general plan, but I do not want to get turned around. Route is Dodson and Blue Creek combo with a one-night camp. What is your go-to navigation setup?

Download an offline map before you leave cell service. Check bearings at obvious landmarks, not only when you feel lost.
If you have to choose, prioritize reliable nav over extra luxury gear.
