Navigation tips for a Grand Canyon backcountry permit day on Grand Canyon Rim to River?

I have the permit and a general plan, but I do not want to get turned around. Route is South Kaibab descent with one night at Bright Angel area. What is your go-to navigation setup?

Download an downloaded topo before you leave cell service. Check bearings at obvious landmarks, not only when you feel lost.
If you have to choose, prioritize reliable nav over extra luxury gear.
