How difficult is the hike to Conundrum Hot Springs on an overnight permit?

The springs draw plenty of people whose last backpacking trip was years ago. An honest read on the approach helps set expectations.

It is a moderate but real backpacking objective: about 17 miles out and back with roughly 2,500 feet of gain, ending at 11,200 feet. No single section is steep or technical. What gets people is the combination of distance and altitude, since the approach is an 8.5-mile uphill walk to a camp elevation where flatlanders sleep badly and headaches are common.

The standard format is 2 days: hike in, soak, camp, hike out. That makes for a long first day with a loaded pack, so an honest fitness check is whether you can comfortably hike 8 to 9 gently climbing miles at altitude with overnight gear. If the answer is shaky, the springs will still be there after a season of training.

Altitude strategy matters more than fitness for many visitors. Sleeping in Aspen or another high valley the night before helps. Hydrate aggressively on the approach, keep the first evening's celebration modest, and know the difference between a normal altitude headache and something worse.

Seasonal note: this is the Elk Mountains at 11,000-plus feet, so early-summer permit dates can mean lingering snow near camp and cold overnight temperatures even in July. Pack real insulation for the post-soak evening, when wet hair and dropping alpine temperatures combine faster than people expect.
