Navigation tips for a The Subway permit day on The Subway?

I have the permit and a general plan, but I do not want to get turned around. Route is Out-and-back through Left Fork from Wildcat Canyon side. What is your go-to navigation setup?

Download an GPX track before you leave cell service. Check bearings at obvious landmarks, not only when you feel lost.
If you have to choose, prioritize reliable nav over extra luxury gear.
