Safety and comfort notes for The Subway Quick report from The Subway (Zion National Park). We went Left Fork approach with a quick weather check at dawn with a group of 2 and started around 6:25 AM. Weather: Cloud cover held until late morning and kept the slickrock from baking. Trail: Rock steps were stable, with a few muddy pockets by the creek. Water: Creek flow was moderate and easy to cross with poles. Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way. Nothing surprising, in a good way. If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service. Small stuff that helps: Download your map before you lose service. Download your map before you lose service. Scorecard (out of 5): overall 5, difficulty 4, scenery 4, conditions 4. Tips - Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect. - Download your map before you lose service. - Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water. - Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
