Safety and comfort notes for The Subway This was a 2-day for The Subway in Zion National Park. We went Left Fork trailhead to the lower Subway section with a group of 4 and started around 5:10 AM. Weather: Wind stayed light, which made the river sections easier to handle. Trail: Footing was solid on the dry benches and a little slick near water lines. Water: Creek flow was moderate and easy to cross with poles. We kept the permit handy and it saved time when someone asked to see it. Overall it was a smooth day. If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service. Small stuff that helps: Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile. Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits. Ratings (1-5): overall 5, difficulty 3, scenery 5, conditions 5. Tips - Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water. - Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits. - Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
