Safety and comfort notes for The Subway
Quick report from The Subway (Zion National Park). We went Left Fork trailhead to the lower Subway section with a group of 5 and started around 5:10 AM.
Weather: Cool morning air helped us move fast before the canyon warmed up. Trail: Footing was solid on the dry benches and a little slick near water lines. Water: Water was running and cold, so we packed extra socks for the exit.
Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way.
I would do this again without changing much.
If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service.
Small stuff that helps: Carry a small trash bag. You will find micro-trash. Carry a small trash bag. You will find micro-trash.
Ratings: overall 4/5, difficulty 3/5, scenery 5/5, conditions 3/5.
Tips
- Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
- Carry a small trash bag. You will find micro-trash.
- Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
