Gear notes from The Subway Quick report from The Subway (Zion National Park). We went Out-and-back through Left Fork from Wildcat Canyon side with a 2 people and started around 6:25 AM. Weather: Wind stayed light - which made the river sections easier to handle. Trail: Rock steps were stable - with a few muddy pockets by the creek. Water: Water was running and cold - so we packed extra socks for the exit. We kept the permit handy and it saved time when someone asked to see it. Overall it was a smooth day. What I would bring again: Extra socks, Sun hoodie One thing I would not skip: Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile. Ratings: overall 5/5, difficulty 4/5, scenery 4/5, conditions 4/5.

General

  • Have a turnaround time before you get committed to the hardest section.
  • Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
  • Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
