GC Backcountry field notes
- Crowds: light.
- Crew: group of 2.
- Start: 6:25 AM.
- Route: South Kaibab descent with one night at Bright Angel area.
- Weather: Clear skies gave us big temperature swings between rim and river.
- Trail: Stone steps were dry by mid-morning but still rough on knees.
- Water: We treated every water stop as optional and stayed over-prepared.
- Wildlife: Saw ravens and mule deer, no close calls with wildlife.
- Gear that helped: Work gloves, Offline map downloaded, Wind shell, Dry bag
TLDR: start early, keep water simple, and do not wing the map.

- •Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
- •Take photos of the permit and save them offline.
- •If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it.
