Grand Canyon Rim to River field notes - Crowds: moderate. - Crew: 6 people. - Start: 5:35 AM. - Route: South Kaibab descent with one night at Bright Angel area. - Weather: Clear skies gave us big temperature swings between rim and river. - Trail: Upper switchbacks held some icy patches before sun hit them. - Water: Water points were open, but we still carried backup capacity. - Wildlife: Saw ravens and mule deer, no close calls with wildlife. - Gear that helped: Dry bag, Offline map downloaded, Sun hoodie, Light traction What I would change next time: Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean. TLDR: start early, keep water simple, and do not wing the map. Tips - Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water. - If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it. - Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean. - Have a turnaround time before you get committed to the hardest section.
