A few notes from our The Wave day. We went Classic out-and-back from Wire Pass before heat builds with a 4 people and started around 5:35 AM.
Weather: Clear sky made timing simple and kept visibility high. Trail: Sand sections were soft but easy to follow with track lines. Water: No on-route water, so we packed the full day carry.
Permit check: had it pulled up before we hit the busy spots.
It was better than the spreadsheet said it would be.
The short version: start early and keep layers simple. (and eat before you bonk)
If I did it again, I would: Download your map before you lose service.
Ratings (1-5): overall 4, difficulty 4, scenery 4, conditions 3.
Tips
- Download your map before you lose service.
- Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean.
- Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
- If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it.
