Just got back from Grand Canyon Rim to River and wrote this while it is still fresh. We went North Kaibab to inner canyon camp with a next-day climb out with a 5 people and started around 6:50 AM. Weather: Wind on exposed ridges eased after sunrise and made pacing simple. Trail: Upper switchbacks held some icy patches before sun hit them. Water: We treated every water stop as optional and stayed over-prepared. No surprises on the permit side, just do not count on cell service. Overall it was a smooth day. The part that surprised me was how much crowds changed our pace. Gear note: Traction and poles were useful for the first shaded switchbacks. Wildlife: Spotted bighorn sheep on lower sections near the river. Scorecard (out of 5): overall 4, difficulty 5, scenery 5, conditions 3.

  • Do not trust parking to work out at the last minute.
  • Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
