Logistics for GC Backcountry We started around 6:25 AM and the early start made the whole day easier. Route we took: South Kaibab descent with one night at Bright Angel area. We kept the permit handy and it saved time when someone asked to see it. Conditions were straightforward: Rim started cold and the canyon floor warmed up by late morning. Upper switchbacks held some icy patches before sun hit them. We treated every water stop as optional and stayed over-prepared. It felt steady from start to finish. If you want less stress: Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile. Ratings: overall 5/5, difficulty 4/5, scenery 5/5, conditions 4/5.

💡Tips from the Trip

💡

General

  • Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
  • Do not trust parking to work out at the last minute.
  • Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
  • Carry a small trash bag. You will find micro-trash.
