Safety and comfort notes for The Subway
Just got back from The Subway and wrote this while it is still fresh. We went Out-and-back through Left Fork from Wildcat Canyon side with a group of 5 and started around 4:45 AM.
Weather: Cloud cover held until late morning and kept the slickrock from baking. Trail: Rock steps were stable, with a few muddy pockets by the creek. Water: Water was running and cold, so we packed extra socks for the exit.
No surprises on the permit side, just do not count on cell service.
Overall it was a smooth day.
If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service.
Small stuff that helps: Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect. Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
Ratings (1-5): overall 4, difficulty 5, scenery 4, conditions 3.
