A few notes from our GC Backcountry day. We went Bright Angel down to river camps with a South Kaibab exit with a 2 people and started around 6:00 AM. Weather: Rim started cold and the canyon floor warmed up by late morning. Trail: Stone steps were dry by mid-morning but still rough on knees. Water: Water points were open, but we still carried backup capacity. Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way. Overall it was a smooth day. The part that surprised me was how much crowds changed our pace. Gear note: A light wind shell was the perfect layer. Wildlife: Saw ravens and mule deer, no close calls with wildlife. Ratings: overall 4/5, difficulty 4/5, scenery 5/5, conditions 4/5.

  • Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
