GC Backcountry: blunt notes Do not overthink it, but do not wing the basics either. Route: North Kaibab to inner canyon camp with a next-day climb out. Start: 6:25 AM. Crowds: moderate. Weather and trail: Clear skies gave us big temperature swings between rim and river. Stone steps were dry by mid-morning but still rough on knees. Water: Tap lines moved quickly, still worth filling before exposed climbs. Best advice: Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect. Scorecard (out of 5): overall 5, difficulty 5, scenery 4, conditions 5.

💡Tips from the Trip

💡

General

  • Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean.
  • Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
  • Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
  • Have a turnaround time before you get committed to the hardest section.
  • If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it.
