Quick report from GC Backcountry (Grand Canyon National Park). We went North Kaibab to inner canyon camp with a next-day climb out with a group of 3 and started around 5:35 AM.
Weather: Clear skies gave us big temperature swings between rim and river. Trail: Upper switchbacks held some icy patches before sun hit them. Water: We treated every water stop as optional and stayed over-prepared.
Permit check: had it pulled up before we hit the busy spots.
Everything worked. That is the whole point.
The short version: start early and keep layers simple.
If I did it again, I would: Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
Ratings: overall 5/5, difficulty 5/5, scenery 4/5, conditions 4/5.
