Safety and comfort notes for The Subway
This was a 2-day for The Subway in Zion National Park. We went Left Fork approach with a quick weather check at dawn with a solo and started around 6:50 AM.
Weather: Cloud cover held until late morning and kept the slickrock from baking. Trail: Rock steps were stable - with a few muddy pockets by the creek. Water: Water was running and cold - so we packed extra socks for the exit.
We kept the permit handy and it saved time when someone asked to see it.
Nothing surprising, in a good way.
If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service.
Small stuff that helps: Carry a small trash bag. You will find micro-trash. Take photos of the permit and save them offline.
Ratings: overall 5/5, difficulty 5/5, scenery 5/5, conditions 5/5.
