This was a 3-day for GC Backcountry in Grand Canyon National Park. We went Bright Angel down to river camps with a South Kaibab exit with a group of 2 and started around 6:50 AM. Weather: Clear skies gave us big temperature swings between rim and river. Trail: Upper switchbacks held some icy patches before sun hit them. Water: We treated every water stop as optional and stayed over-prepared. Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way. Overall it was a smooth day. The part that surprised me was how much crowds changed our pace. (it was not dramatic, just constant) Gear note: A light wind shell was the perfect layer. Wildlife: Saw ravens and mule deer, no close calls with wildlife. Scorecard (out of 5): overall 4, difficulty 5, scenery 4, conditions 4. Tips - If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it. - Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect. - Carry a small trash bag. You will find micro-trash. - Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean. - Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
