GC Backcountry timeline (rough)
- 6:25 AM: started moving
- +1h: settled into pace and stopped fiddling with layers
- +2h: first real break and water check
- +4h: turned around or started the exit
- finish: tired but not cooked
Conditions: Clear skies gave us big temperature swings between rim and river. Main corridor tread was firm and easy to follow all day. Water points were open, but we still carried backup capacity.
Crowds: packed. Crew: group of 4.
Overall it was a smooth day.
What helped: Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water. Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
Ratings (1-5): overall 4, difficulty 5, scenery 5, conditions 3.
Tips
- Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
- Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
- Carry a small trash bag. You will find micro-trash.
- Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
