Gear notes from The Subway A few notes from our The Subway day. We went Left Fork approach with a quick weather check at dawn with a group of 2 and started around 6:50 AM. Weather: Cool morning air helped us move fast before the canyon warmed up. Trail: Footing was solid on the dry benches and a little slick near water lines. Water: Water was running and cold, so we packed extra socks for the exit. Permit check: had it pulled up before we hit the busy spots. Overall it was a smooth day. What I would bring again: Wind shell, Trekking poles, Electrolyte mix One thing I would not skip: Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits. Scorecard (out of 5): overall 4, difficulty 5, scenery 4, conditions 5.

  • Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
  • If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it.
