A few notes from our GC Backcountry day. We went North Kaibab to inner canyon camp with a next-day climb out with a 4 people and started around 6:00 AM. Weather: Clear skies gave us big temperature swings between rim and river. Trail: Stone steps were dry by mid-morning but still rough on knees. Water: Tap lines moved quickly, still worth filling before exposed climbs. We kept the permit handy and it saved time when someone asked to see it. No drama, just miles. The short version: start early and keep layers simple. If I did it again, I would: Take photos of the permit and save them offline. Ratings: overall 5/5, difficulty 5/5, scenery 4/5, conditions 5/5.

💡Tips from the Trip

💡

General

  • Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
  • Do not trust parking to work out at the last minute.
  • Take photos of the permit and save them offline.
  • Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean.
  • Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
