Safety and comfort notes for The Wave
A few notes from our The Wave day. We went Classic out-and-back from Wire Pass before heat builds with a group of 6 and started around 5:10 AM.
Weather: Clear sky made timing simple and kept visibility high. Trail: Sand sections were soft but easy to follow with track lines. Water: Water management was the main planning task for the day.
We kept the permit handy and it saved time when someone asked to see it.
Overall it was a smooth day.
If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service.
Small stuff that helps: Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile. Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
Scorecard (out of 5): overall 5, difficulty 5, scenery 4, conditions 5.
Tips
- Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
- Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
- Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
