Safety and comfort notes for Big Bend Backcountry This was a day for Big Bend Backcountry in Big Bend National Park. We went Outer Mountain Loop sections from the Chisos side with a 5 people and started around 4:45 AM. Weather: Dry air and steady sun meant layers changed fast after sunrise. Trail: Tread was dry and clear with a few loose rock corners. Water: We treated every known source as uncertain and carried extra. No surprises on the permit side, just do not count on cell service. It felt steady from start to finish. If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service. Small stuff that helps: Take photos of the permit and save them offline. Take photos of the permit and save them offline. Ratings: overall 4/5, difficulty 3/5, scenery 5/5, conditions 4/5.
