Quick report from Big Bend Backcountry (Big Bend). We went Outer Mountain Loop sections from the Chisos side with a group of 3 and started around 6:25 AM. Weather: Dry air and steady sun meant layers changed fast after sunrise. Trail: Tread was dry and clear with a few loose rock corners. Water: Cache strategy helped us keep pack weight under control. Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way. No drama, just miles. The short version: start early and keep layers simple. If I did it again, I would: Do not trust parking to work out at the last minute. Ratings: overall 5/5, difficulty 3/5, scenery 4/5, conditions 5/5.

💡Tips from the Trip

💡

General

  • Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean.
  • Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
  • Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
  • Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
  • Do not trust parking to work out at the last minute.
