A few notes from our Big Bend Backcountry day. We went Chisos Basin entry with East Rim side mileage with a 4 people and started around 5:10 AM.
Weather: Wind on ridges was steady but never pushed us off pace. Trail: Tread was dry and clear with a few loose rock corners. Water: We treated every known source as uncertain and carried extra.
Permit check: had it pulled up before we hit the busy spots.
Overall it was a smooth day.
The part that surprised me was how much footing changed our pace.
Gear note: A simple buff pulled double duty for dust and sun.
Wildlife: Tracks were everywhere, but no close wildlife encounters.
Scorecard (out of 5): overall 4, difficulty 3, scenery 5, conditions 4.

- •Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
- •If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it.
- •Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
- •Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
