Safety and comfort notes for Big Bend Backcountry
A few notes from our Big Bend Backcountry day. We went Dodson and Blue Creek combo with a one-night camp with a 3 people and started around 4:45 AM.
Weather: Dry air and steady sun meant layers changed fast after sunrise. Trail: Tread was dry and clear with a few loose rock corners. Water: Water planning mattered most since natural sources were limited.
Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way.
It felt steady from start to finish.
If you are on this route soon: set a turnaround time, keep a dry layer handy, and do not count on service.
Small stuff that helps: If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it. Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
Ratings (1-5): overall 5, difficulty 3, scenery 4, conditions 4.
