Gear that made the difference on Big Bend Backcountry:
We went Chisos Basin entry w/ East Rim side mileage starting at 5:10 AM. Wind on ridges was steady but never pushed us off pace. Tread was dry and clear w/ a few loose rock corners.
Gear that worked: Electrolytes, Approach shoes.
Light gloves helped on chilly starts before the sun popped.
The boring prep stuff matters.
