Gear notes from Big Bend Backcountry
Quick report from Big Bend Backcountry (Big Bend National Park). We went Outer Mountain Loop sections from the Chisos side with a 4 people and started around 6:00 AM.
Weather: Cool morning temps made long exposed miles feel manageable. Trail: Route stayed obvious, with minor wash marks in low spots. Water: Cache strategy helped us keep pack weight under control.
Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way.
Overall it was a smooth day.
What I would bring again: Electrolyte mix, Sun hoodie, Trekking poles
One thing I would not skip: Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
Ratings: overall 5/5, difficulty 5/5, scenery 4/5, conditions 4/5.
Tips
- Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits.
- Download your map before you lose service.
- Have a turnaround time before you get committed to the hardest section.
- Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water.
- Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
