Here is what worked (and what did not) on Big Bend Backcountry. We went Outer Mountain Loop sections from the Chisos side starting at 5:10 AM. Cool morning temps made long exposed miles feel manageable. No major blowdown, just loose gravel in steep sections. Gear that worked: Hiking boots, Wind shell. Light gloves helped on chilly starts before the sun popped. Ratings: 5 overall, 3 difficulty, 4 scenery. TLDR: Take photos of the permit. Already planning the next one. Tips - Take photos of the permit. - Test new gear before the trip. - Poles help more than you think.
