Big Bend Backcountry: blunt notes
Do not overthink it, but do not wing the basics either.
Route: Outer Mountain Loop sections from the Chisos side. Start: 6:00 AM. Crowds: packed.
Weather and trail: Cool morning temps made long exposed miles feel manageable. Route stayed obvious, with minor wash marks in low spots.
Water: We treated every known source as uncertain and carried extra.
Best advice: Download your map before you lose service.
Mistake I see a lot: people start late and then rush the exit.
Ratings: overall 4/5, difficulty 5/5, scenery 5/5, conditions 3/5.
Tips
- Keep snacks accessible so breaks stay short and clean.
- Download your map before you lose service.
- Take photos of the permit and save them offline.
