Logistics for Big Bend Backcountry We started around 6:25 AM and the early start made the whole day easier. Route we took: Chisos Basin entry with East Rim side mileage. Permit check was low drama. Screenshot + ID and we were on our way. Conditions were straightforward: Dry air and steady sun meant layers changed fast after sunrise. Tread was dry and clear with a few loose rock corners. Water planning mattered most since natural sources were limited. Overall it was a smooth day. If you want less stress: Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits. Ratings (1-5): overall 5, difficulty 3, scenery 5, conditions 5. Tips - Bring one extra liter if you are unsure about water. - Poles help more than people admit on slick or steep exits. - Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
