Logistics for Big Bend Backcountry
We started around 4:45 AM and the early start made the whole day easier.
Route we took: Dodson and Blue Creek combo with a one-night camp.
Permit check: had it pulled up before we hit the busy spots.
Conditions were straightforward: Cool morning temps made long exposed miles feel manageable. No major blowdown, just loose gravel in steep sections. We treated every known source as uncertain and carried extra.
Overall it was a smooth day.
If you want less stress: If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it.
Ratings (1-5): overall 5, difficulty 5, scenery 4, conditions 3.
Tips
- If the trail is muddy, slow down instead of fighting it.
- Take photos of the permit and save them offline.
- Start earlier than you think if you want space on the first mile.
- Pack a dry layer even if the forecast looks perfect.
