Gear Tips for TRT Thru-Hike

⚠️ Required Gear

  • Bear canister (required for entire trail)
  • Water capacity for 20+ mile dry stretches (4-6 liters)
  • California Campfire Permit (free, for stove use)
  • Desolation Wilderness permit (for that section)
  • Water filter (sources require treatment)

Recommended Gear

  • Trekking poles for rocky terrain and elevation change
  • Sun protection (much of trail is exposed)
  • Detailed TRT map or GPS tracks
  • Satellite communicator for remote sections
  • Swimsuit for lake access opportunities

💡 Pro Tips

  • Weigh your pack before you go. A lighter pack makes for a happier hike.
  • Rent expensive gear if you are trying a new activity for the first time.
  • Test all new gear at home before hitting the trail.
  • Check current regulations as some items may be required seasonally.
