Last updated: 2026-07-22 --- The type of incident is Wildfire and involves the following unit(s) Inyo National Forest. --- State: California --- Coordinates: Latitude: 36° 55 1 Longitude: 118° 14 28 --- NOTE: All fire perimeters and points are approximations. --- Incident Overview: The Rock Fire started in the Aberdeen area, south of Big Pine, north of Independence at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Monday, July 21. The cause is under investigation.On Monday, the fire moved north towards Aberdeen, before shifting winds pushed it south. Crews then worked along the Black Rock Road to protect 8 Mile Ranch. Erratic and shifting winds near the fire have been challenging to firefighters. On the Inyo National Forest, the fire is currently impacting the Sawmill Trailhead near Division Creek Road. Three other trailheads are being impacted - Taboose, Red Lake and Birch. The Rock Fire is burning in grass and brush. Firefighters are working to keep the fire north of Division Creek Road.
