About Chesler Park

Chesler Park is a hidden meadow surrounded by sandstone spires in the heart of the Needles District. Five designated campsites (CP1-CP5) make this one of Canyonlands' most prized backpacking destinations. The 5-mile approach via the Joint Trail involves scrambling through slot canyons and crack systems. From camp, day hikes access Druid Arch, Devils Kitchen, and the surrounding canyon network.

Chesler Park is the crown jewel of Needles District backpacking. This isolated meadow sits in a bowl of sandstone pinnacles, accessible only by foot. The five designated campsites offer what many consider the finest backcountry camping in all of Canyonlands.

The Experience

The slot in the rock wall seems impossibly narrow, but you squeeze through and suddenly Chesler Park opens before you. Red and white banded spires ring a green meadow dotted with wildflowers. The silence is profound. At night, with no light pollution within 50 miles, the Milky Way arches overhead like a river of stars. You understand why people return here year after year.

From Elephant Hill Trailhead, the route crosses slickrock terrain before dropping into the Joint Trail. This famous passage squeezes through fractures in the rock barely wide enough for a backpack. Emerging from the final joint, Chesler Park spreads out below.

The five campsites (CP1-CP5) ring the meadow, each offering privacy and views. From camp, day hikes lead to Druid Arch, the Devils Kitchen, and deeper into the maze of canyons that define the Needles.
