How to book the walk, night by night

Use the K'gari (Fraser Island) Great Walk trip planner on the Queensland National Parks Booking Service. Select your start date and choose View Availability to see which camping areas have space. Then select the camping area for night 1, set the nights and guests, choose Select and then Continue to add it to your itinerary.

Repeat that for each night of the walk. QPWS asks you to check each camp as you add it, so you do not book the same camping area twice by mistake. When the itinerary is complete, choose Book Now, then Add & Checkout, and pay. The confirmation email arrives within 2 hours.

The walkers' camps

Lake Boomanjin, Lake Benaroon, Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, Jabiru Swamp, Valley of the Giants and Lake Garawongera are walkers' camps: small camping areas with few or no facilities, kept for people on the Great Walk. Each gives access to toilets nearby, platform seats and water, which you must treat before drinking.

Central Station is different. It is a large, formal, fenced camping area in rainforest, inland from Eurong, with a 9 pm noise curfew. It has water taps (treat the water), coin-operated hot showers, flushing toilets, picnic tables and washing-up facilities, and food storage cages and platforms. Mobile phone coverage is generally not available there.

Wongari (dingo) rules at the camps

Every camp page carries the same warning. It is an offence anywhere on K'gari to feed a wongari (dingo), to make food available to one, or to attract or disturb one on purpose, on public or private land, and penalties apply.

QPWS recommends that families with children camp in areas with wongari deterrent fencing. On the walk, the Lake McKenzie and Lake Boomanjin walkers' camps have a dingo-deterrent fence around them, and Central Station is a fenced camping area.

Fires, water and camp times

Open fires must not be lit on QPWS managed areas of K'gari, except in the fire rings at the Dundubara and Waddy Point camping areas. Every one of the walk's camp pages lists no camp fires. Treat all water before you drink it. Check-in at every camp is from 2 pm and check-out is by 11 am.

What PermitSnag does here

Each permit page says whether you can set a PermitSnag alert for it, and links to the agency that sells it.
