How a lake zone works
Ontario Parks lists Algonquin as a lake zone or area booking. You reserve the zone for each night of your trip. Inside it, campsites are first come, first served. If you arrive at a site that is full, you continue your journey until you find an available one.
The park page counts 29 entry points to maintained campsites and portages, over 2,000 km (1,243 mi) of canoe routes connecting thousands of lakes, three backpacking trails, and historic log ranger cabins to rent. It says the park is serviced by Park Bus.
Limits and the permit
Your confirmation letter serves as your permit. Carry a digital or printed copy, or your reservation number. The permit holder must be 16 or older.
The maximum stay on any one backcountry site is 16 consecutive nights, and the maximum across all backcountry campsites in one itinerary is 23 nights. A backcountry campsite holds up to 9 people at Algonquin. Backcountry fees are paid in full when you reserve.
Fees for 2026
From April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 the Algonquin backcountry fee is $12.43 per adult (age 18 and over) and $5.65 per child (age 6 to 17), HST included. An online reservation adds an $11.00 fee. Reservations cannot be changed or cancelled more than four months before the arrival day.
