About Conundrum Hot Springs
Conundrum Hot Springs consists of multiple natural hot spring pools at 11,200 feet in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The 8.5-mile approach follows Conundrum Creek through aspen forest and subalpine meadows. Permits are required for both day use and overnight camping.
Conundrum Hot Springs is one of the only backcountry hot springs in Colorado accessible without 4WD or technical climbing. The pools sit at 11,200 feet beneath 14,265-foot Castle Peak. The permit system was implemented in 2021 after years of overuse made the area a mess.
The Experience
The hike in is long but gentle, following Conundrum Creek through aspen groves and wildflower meadows. When you finally reach the springs, the hot water is reward for every step. You soak while watching the alpenglow on Castle and Conundrum peaks. At night, the Milky Way arcs overhead.
The trail starts at the Conundrum Creek Trailhead (8,800') and follows the creek valley for 8.5 miles to the hot springs. The grade is steady but never brutal, gaining 2,400 feet over the distance. The springs themselves consist of several rock-lined pools of varying temperatures.
Most people camp near the springs (designated sites only) and soak in the evening and morning before hiking out. Day hiking is technically possible but means 17 miles in one day.
