Helicopters delivered water to cool and knock down hotspots, assisting firefighters on the ground. A helitorch burned out a section of steep terrain, removing fine fuels that would otherwise be a receptive fuel bed with the upcoming hot and dry weather. Heavy equipment widened control lines, while firefighters continued building control and contingency lines along the eastern border ahead of warmer and drier conditions expected this week. Overnight, crews monitored interior smoke and heat and bolstered line security. Today, firefighters on the eastern side of the fire will continue working toward each other from the north and south, with the goal of connecting containment lines. As other portions of the fire become more secure, crews are removing hose and beginning suppression repair on the western side. If conditions remain favorable, firefighters expect to complete burnout operations on the northern side today. The Plaskett Fire remains under a full suppression strategy, with firefighter and public safety continuing to guide all operations.  Weather & Air Quality:  A weak thermal trough will move toward the coast today and Tuesday, bringing light easterly winds. Last updated: 2026-09-05 --- The type of incident is Wildfire and involves the following unit(s) BLM Northern CA District. --- State: California --- Coordinates: Latitude: 41° 37 49 Longitude: 119° 54 58 --- NOTE: All fire perimeters and points are approximations. --- Incident Overview: The S-1 Vya Fire was reported at 8:59 p.m. on Aug. 24, 2026. A Type 3 Incident Command Team along with local firefighting resources conducted fire suppression operations during the initial attack and extended attack phase of the fire. High winds and dry fuels contributed to the fire's rapid growth. California Interagency Incident Management Team 2 assumed command of the incident at 6 p.m. Aug. 27, 2026.The fire has impacted local roads including highway 34, grazing allotments, along with Sage-Grouse habitat. Evacuations remain in place due to fire impact on structures, additional structures remain threatened including the community of Vya. Fire is burning on both private and BLM lands. The fire was threatening Massacre Rim Wilderness Study Area and East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness. Big Sur residents are likely to see more smoke production as these warm conditions rekindle heat in unburned fuels within containment lines. Overnight, fire activity increased in the northwest corner of the fire within the previous slopover north of Manuel Peak. Access to this area is difficult due to extremely steep and rugged terrain. In the location of Tin House, crews continue constructing direct containment lines and extinguishing hotspots as terrain allows. Firefighters are identifying and improving containment lines and utilizing water handling equipment throughout the area from Cachagua east to Los Padre Reservoir, down to Chews Ridge and Arroyo Seco and points south. Handcrews and engines continue to assess structures in nearby campgrounds. Near Pick Creek located on the south end of the fire, firefighters are engaged in direct suppression of the fire where terrain and conditions allow. Weather & Air Quality:  A trend of hotter and drier conditions will start today. Humidity values will start the day around 50% then rapidly lower to around 20% this afternoon as high pressure builds and light offshore winds develop. Expect full sunshine with no shading of the fuels and no marine layer along the coast. High temperatures in the 70s around Big Sur with 80s over most of the fire area and lower 90s around the containment lines in Upper Carmel Valley out towards Arroyo Seco. General winds will waver from the Northeast to Southeast but remain under 10mph with light upslope winds in drainages. The main forecast focus for tonight will be poor RH recovery with values staying steady from 25-40% over most of the fire tonight into Tuesday morning.   Road Closures: Road closures on Highway 1 in the Big Sur area have been reduced. To support Plaskett Fire emergency response efforts, Highway 1 remains closed between Pacific Valley at Post Mile 16 and Monterey/San Luis Obispo County line at Post Mile 0.0. The forest stretches across almost 220 miles from north to south and consists of two separate land divisions. The northern division is within Monterey County and northern San Luis Obispo County and includes the beautiful Big Sur Coast and scenic interior areas.
