Newport Wilderness Gear Checklist
Every campsite at Newport State Park is a walk from the parking lot, the park has no carts, and it does not sell firewood. The three trip reports we read were written in February, March and late April, and each one was cold, so the gear that matters is a sleep system for freezing nights, a water plan that survives ice, a stove you tested outdoors, and a shelter you can pitch out of the wind off Lake Michigan. In spring, add protection for clouds of small flies.

- How you arrive
- The park lists 17 hike-in backpack sites, one of them a group site, and says every piece of gear and food has to come in on foot or by bike. It has no carts to borrow.
- What a site has
- Each site has a pit toilet, a fire ring with a flip-up grill, a food lock box, and a bench or two. There are no showers anywhere in the park, and all garbage leaves with you.
- Water
- Tap water is at the park office, plus a seasonal solar pump by the picnic shelter at Lot 3. A group in March filled up for one night at the office and refilled the next afternoon at the headquarters.

- Carry distances
- A March group walked about 2.5 miles along the bay to site 12, hiked about 3 miles back to headquarters the next day, then went roughly 5 miles north to site 16. An April hiker covered 8.3 miles on the first day and 9.7 on the second while moving between sites 16 and 14 with a 25 pound pack.

- Cold
- A February overnight saw lows between minus 5 and minus 10 F by local reports. A March trip hit 2 F with wind. An April trip dropped into the 20s overnight and stayed in the low 40s by day.

- Flies
- Europe Lake, at the north end of the park, has lakeflies that appear a few weeks before mosquito season. One author calls the park fairly bug-free from August to April, but an April hiker met dense clouds of small flies everywhere.

What the agency requires on Newport State Park
Everything you need, carried on your back or bike
The park says all gear and supplies come in on foot or by bike, and it has no carts. The state's backpack-site page adds that sites can sit from a few hundred yards to a few miles from the nearest parking.

Bags for all your garbage
All garbage must be carried out of every campsite.
A plan for firewood
The park does not sell firewood. You may gather wood that is dead and down, and cutting anything from a live tree is illegal. Wisconsin also limits moving firewood from home.
What hikers carry on Newport State Park
A down sleep system warm enough for well below freezing
All three trips met temperatures that punish a three-season bag. The February overnighter saw lows near minus 10 F, the March group logged 2 F plus wind chill, and the April hiker was glad of down quilts in the 20s but got cold after 2 or 3 a.m.
The March group reports that even with a full down kit the mornings were freezing.

Water bottles sized for the night, with a place to refill
The park lists water only at the office and a seasonal pump. The March group topped up at the park office before hiking out and refilled at headquarters on day two, since the next stop was five miles on.

A water filter you keep from freezing
One member's filter pouch froze solid overnight in the tent vestibule. In cold months, sleep with the filter inside your bag or switch to boiling.

A stove you already ran outside in the cold
The February overnighter's stove valve leaked after one use, which he blamed on ice crystals, and he had to leave the fuel attached. The March group and the April hiker both boiled water on a stove for oatmeal and dinner.

Warm gloves, sized to work in
The April hiker's hands stayed numb all day at temperatures in the low 40s, and avoided taking them off even for photos. The March group wore gloves to break up shore ice.

A shelter you can stake or weigh down in lake wind
Gusts off Lake Michigan drove the March group off a dune ridge and into the pines, where they tied tents down and stacked fallen limbs against the vestibules. The April hiker also wished his hammock had hung back in the trees rather than beside a dune. In snow, the February shelter needed anchors that were left to harden before tightening.

Fire starter and a way to carry dry kindling
Wood is dead-and-down only. The April hiker found little dry fuel near site 14 and had to walk about a hundred yards up the trail and haul armloads back, while the March group got a fire going from deadfall and kept it going as temperatures fell.

Snowshoes or traction for winter trips
The February overnighter snowshoed roughly 10 miles, partly on trails and partly along the frozen shoreline. The March group moved through ankle-deep snow with loaded packs.

A UV purifier with weak batteries
The February overnighter tested the flashlight mode at home but not the ultraviolet lamp, and it failed on the trail. Fresh snow gave him drinking water, which is a luck you cannot plan on.
An axe for cutting standing trees
The April hiker saw several sites scarred by campers who hacked into live trees. The park only allows dead and down wood, so a folding saw for fallen limbs is the more useful tool.

Can I use a cart or wagon at Newport State Park?
No. The park says it has no carts and that all gear and supplies arrive on foot or by bike. Plan a real backpack, with sites ranging from short walks to several miles from a lot.

Yes, in spring especially. Europe Lake gets lakeflies a few weeks before mosquito season, and one April visitor met thick clouds of small flies. One trail writer calls August to April relatively bug-free, so expect it to vary by year.
