Does flash flooding ever close Indian Cove Campground in Joshua Tree?

Asked 5h ago2 views1 answer

Desert thunderstorms can hit Joshua Tree National Park suddenly, and campers heading to Indian Cove sometimes want to know whether storm damage has ever shut the campground down and how to check its current status before a trip.

Joshua Tree National Park warns that flash flooding is a year-round hazard in the park. The park's floods page states that "floods and flash floods can happen anytime of year in Joshua Tree and can be life threatening," and it tells visitors to check current conditions for park closures before and during a storm. Indian Cove has been hit by flash flooding before. A park news release describes a period when strong thunderstorms caused damage on the afternoon of Monday, August 4, closing the Indian Cove area, including Indian Cove Road south of the ranger station, Indian Cove Campground, and the Indian Cove Group campsites, "until further notice." Floodwaters scoured roadway edges and caused significant flood damage inside portions of the campground, and the park estimated about two weeks would be needed to complete repairs before the campground and road could reopen. That flood closure is a historical event, not a current one. As of the park's most recently updated seasonal status page, the only Indian Cove closure listed is a low-demand seasonal partial closure of sites 40 through 101, which the park says runs "from June 1 untill August 28" each year, unrelated to storm damage. Because flash flood closures can appear with little notice, the park directs visitors to its Alerts and Conditions page, which links to a live map of current closures for roads, trails, campgrounds, and backcountry zones. Checking that page, along with the forecast, shortly before arrival is the most reliable way to confirm whether Indian Cove is affected by any storm-related closure on a given date.
