A flash flood on August 29, 2026 in Bright Angel Canyon caused major damage to the Transcanyon Waterline, the pipe that supplies water from the inner canyon to the South Rim. Because of the resulting water shortage, the park ordered all concessioner lodging closed. Effective Monday, August 31, 2026, all park concessions will halt overnight accommodations, a closure that covers El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Phantom Ranch, Delaware North's Yavapai Lodge, and Trailer Village. Hotels outside the park boundary are not part of this closure. Overnight hotel accommodations located outside the park in the town of Tusayan will not be impacted by changes in park operations. Source: https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/lodging.htm
Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of the canyon, is closed separately as a flood-damaged site rather than only a water-supply issue: Phantom Ranch is currently CLOSED due to a significant flash flood that took place on August 29, 2026. Source: https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/eatingsleeping.htm
As of the park's most recent public statements, no target date has been set for restoring any of this lodging. The North Kaibab Trail, Cottonwood Campground, Phantom Ranch, the Bright Angel Campground, and the Black Bridge and Silver Bridge were previously closed following the August 29 flash flood, and there is currently no estimated date for reopening these areas, with the park adding that reopening decisions will be based on conditions on the ground and the park's ability to safely restore access. The North Rim is a separate case. For the 2026 season, overnight lodging is not available on the North Rim during the 2026 season, with visitors directed to accommodations outside the park. Source: https://www.nps.gov/grca/northrimstatus.htm
Anyone holding or planning a South Rim, Phantom Ranch, or North Rim lodging reservation should check the park's lodging and eating-and-sleeping pages directly before travel, since the park has not published a reopening date for any of the affected properties as of this writing.
