Phantom Ranch Lottery: How to Apply
Phantom Ranch is the lodge at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, 13.6 miles down the North Kaibab Trail. Its cabin and dorm beds go out by a monthly lottery run by Grand Canyon National Park Lodges, more than a year ahead. Before you enter, know that as of October 13, 2026, NPS listed the whole ranch as closed after the August 29 flash flood.
Guests in the cabins and dorms need no backcountry permit. The campground next door is a different system.
This guide covers the Grand Canyon backcountry permit.
Is Phantom Ranch open?
NPS says no, as of October 13, 2026. Its closure list after the August 29 flood reads: “The entirety of Phantom Ranch, including Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen, and Phantom Ranch cabins.” Both river bridges are closed too: “Black Bridge and Silver Bridge spanning the Colorado River.” And: “There is no estimated reopening of these closure areas at this time.”
The lodge operator's pages said nothing about it when we read them on October 13, 2026. Its lottery page was last changed on July 9, 2026, before the flood. It does list Phantom Ranch mule rides as cancelled through February 28, 2027 because of trail conditions.
We do not know whether the operator will honor, move or refund stays booked for the closed period. Ask Grand Canyon National Park Lodges directly before you build a trip around a lottery win.

How the Phantom Ranch lottery works
- Pick the month you want to stay. Each stay month has its own lottery, which takes entries online from the 1st to the 25th of the month 14 calendar months before it. The operator calls this the 15th month prior, counting the stay month.
- The draw is random, and it assigns cabin and dorm beds.
- Winners are told, and their reservations confirmed, by the end of the following month.
- Beds nobody wins or claims, plus all Phantom Ranch meals, go on general sale 12 months before the stay month, at 12:01 AM MT online and 7 AM MT by phone.
- Reconfirm your stay by phone 2 days before your hike.
The hiker dorms, closed since early 2020, were scheduled to reopen for stays from September 1, 2026 under a one-off booking schedule. The normal lottery covers stays from September 2027 onward.

Camping at Bright Angel Campground instead
Bright Angel Campground sits beside the ranch, 14 miles down the North Kaibab Trail, 9.5 miles down the Bright Angel Trail, 7 miles down the South Kaibab Trail. Camping there needs a Grand Canyon backcountry permit, which NPS gives out through its own early access lottery on Recreation.gov. As of October 13, 2026, NPS listed it inside the same closure.

Phantom Ranch lottery questions
How does the Phantom Ranch lottery work?
Grand Canyon National Park Lodges, which runs Phantom Ranch, fills its cabin and dorm beds by a random online lottery. You enter between the 1st and the 25th of the month, more than a year before the month you want to stay, and winners hear by the end of the following month. Beds nobody wins or claims go on general sale later, along with all Phantom Ranch meals.
When can I enter the Phantom Ranch lottery?
The next window takes entries October 1 to 25, 2026, for stays in December 2027. Each stay month has its own window, 14 calendar months earlier, and winners are told by the end of November 2026.
Is Phantom Ranch open right now?
No, according to NPS as of October 13, 2026. After the August 29 flash flood, NPS lists the entirety of Phantom Ranch as closed, including Bright Angel Campground, the canteen and the cabins, and says there is no estimated reopening. The lodge operator's lottery pages did not mention the closure when we read them the same day, so confirm with them before you count on a stay.
Do I need a backcountry permit to stay at Phantom Ranch?
No. The operator says guests in the cabins and dorms do not need a backcountry permit. Camping at Bright Angel Campground next to the ranch does need a Grand Canyon backcountry permit, which comes through a separate NPS lottery on Recreation.gov.
Are Phantom Ranch mule rides running?
No. The operator lists Phantom Ranch mule rides as cancelled through February 28, 2027 because of trail conditions.
