Baxter Pass (JMT) Gear Checklist
Baxter Pass climbs more than 6,000 feet from a desert trailhead outside Independence to the Sierra Crest, then drops into Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir Trail near Dollar Lake. The Forest Service calls it steep, rugged and hard to locate in places, and hikers describe loose rock, brush and a west side with almost no trail. People who did it carried more water than they expected to need, a real map, sun protection for snow and repellent for the lake country.
What shapes your gear on Baxter Pass
- A small quota and an Inyo permit
- Inyo National Forest issues the permit even though the trail ends in Kings Canyon National Park. The forest's trail page limits overnight visitors to 8 people a day from May 1 to November 1. Its older quota list splits that into 5 spaces released six months ahead and 3 released two weeks ahead. The permit is valid only for the date and trailhead you reserved.

- The climb
- The Forest Service puts the climb at more than 6,000 feet and says the trail is not recommended for stock. A 2020 hiker started from the trailhead and reached the pass at 1 pm. A 2021 pair put the crest at 12,300 feet and managed headaches and nosebleeds. A 1970 party started before sunrise and reached the high meadow near noon.

- The east side is rocky, then brushy
- A 2014 hiker found the top of the east side very rocky and the middle overgrown and loose, opening up only below about 8,000 feet where the surface changes from rock to dirt. A 2016 pair described several miles of burn zone between the trailhead and the upper slopes, with only a few short overgrown stretches and a few dead trees across the trail.

- The west side has almost no trail
- Four writers found the path faint or gone between Baxter Lakes and Dollar Lake. One saw only faint traces and picked a route from high point to high point. Another followed rock ducks that ran out after a couple hundred yards. A 2016 pair says that if you lose it, you can walk downhill until you meet the John Muir Trail. The sign at Dollar Lake reads that the trail is not maintained.

- Heat low, snow and mosquitoes high
- The trailhead sits near 6,000 feet above the Owens Valley, and a 2014 hiker saw 105 degrees in Independence on his hitch back. A late June party met suncupped snow fields and then mosquitoes at a forest brook on the west side. The same 2014 hiker found a small cornice at the top.

What the agency requires on Baxter Pass
A printed wilderness permit
Overnight trips need a wilderness permit all year. Reservations cannot be sold or transferred, and the forest cancels one that is not printed before the no-show deadline. In the park, the permit must be signed, on you and shown on request.

Food stored out of reach of bears
On the Inyo side, food and scented items go in bear-proof containers or are counterbalanced at least 15 feet up and 10 feet from the trunk. A container is required where no suitable trees exist. The park requires an approved canister in the Rae Lakes loop area, which it defines to include the Woods Creek drainage south of Pinchot Pass, and it lists Dollar Lake in that area.

A stove, not a fire, up high
Campfires are banned above 10,400 feet on the Inyo side. In Kings Canyon National Park the limit is 10,000 feet.

A way to bury waste and wash away from water
In the park, bury solid human waste at a depth of 6 inches, 100 feet or more from trails, camps and water. Pack out used toilet paper. Carry water 100 feet away before washing yourself, dishes or clothes, and do not camp within 25 feet of water.

More water than the stream map suggests, for the lower slopes and the walk out
A hiker who came down the east side early to beat the heat still had to walk four miles of dirt road with one quart left, then hitched two rides and lost eight pounds in five days. He said he carried two quarts when he could. Trailhead heat, not the upper basin, was his problem.
A real map plus a track on your phone
Hikers in this area lean on paper maps and downloaded tracks because the trail disappears. One pair used printed maps and a phone app, plus two published trail maps for the area. A solo hiker in 2025 went back and forth along the ridge looking for the faint path down the west side.

Sunglasses for the snow
A June hiker crossed a wide snow field in strong sun, then found the world looked dim for a while afterward. He blamed himself for leaving sunglasses at home.
Insect repellent in an easy pocket
A 1970 group left the roadhead at dawn in a swarm of bugs. A June hiker was swarmed by mosquitoes at a forest brook and dug through his pack for repellent while running. A late June pair were chased by mosquitoes in Sixty Lakes Basin.

Rain and snow layers
Weather turns on this crest. A September pair saw a surprising amount of snow pile up on Mount Baxter after a clear start, and a late June pair walked out through thunder and rain.

Room in the trailhead food locker
The Forest Service lists food storage lockers at the trailhead. It is the only service at the trailhead, so leftover food can wait there while you exit elsewhere.
15 people can go on one permit. Split this list between them so nobody carries two stoves.

Light, flexible boots for the east-side descent
A 2014 hiker came down the loose upper slope on his toes, with the trail pointing straight down the fall line. The toes of his lightweight boots took the load, and he ended the day with sore, swollen toes after dropping 2,300 feet.
A 60-pound pack
Three soldiers were grinding up toward Baxter Lakes with 60-pound packs when a 2014 hiker passed them. They were headed to the lakes to fish. His own pack weighed 28.5 pounds. He thought it an awfully hard walk for maybe catching a fish.
Faith in rock ducks
The ducks marking the trail beyond Dollar Lake gave out after a couple hundred yards, and logs across the path had not been cut. The hiker crossed a talus slope by guessing where the trail should go.

Is the Baxter Pass trail maintained?
Not in the usual sense. The Forest Service calls it steep and rugged and hard to locate in places. A sign at Dollar Lake says the trail is not maintained, and hikers report brush, loose rock and almost no trail between Baxter Lakes and Dollar Lake. Some say it is easy to follow with cross-country experience.

Do you need a bear canister for Baxter Pass?
On the Inyo side the forest requires a bear-proof container or a counterbalance hang, and a container where trees are too small. Kings Canyon National Park requires an approved canister in the Rae Lakes loop area, and it counts Dollar Lake in that area, so plan on one if you camp on the park side.

How many people can start on Baxter Pass each day?
The Forest Service limits overnight visitors to 8 people a day from May 1 to November 1. Its older quota list shows 5 reservable six months ahead and 3 reservable two weeks ahead. Canceled spaces return to the calendar within 24 hours.

Where do you find water on Baxter Pass?
Hikers report stream crossings on the east side in summer, Baxter Lake and Baxter Creek, and ponds near the west side trail in early summer. A June hiker called Baxter Creek the last reliable marked source before Dollar Lake, so fill up there. Treat everything you drink.
