White Chief (Mineral King): what makes it different
White Chief is the Mineral King entry point for the old mining canyon of the same name. The trail forks left from the Eagle and Mosquito route, passes the ruins of a miner's cabin, and ends at a glacial bowl, with the first legal camp 4.1 miles out.2,1,3
Getting to the start
The trail starts from the lot at the end of Mineral King Road, in the upper valley. Recreation.gov names that lot as parking for this entry point and says the permit is issued at the Mineral King Ranger Station. A guide places the White Chief trail at the south end of the Eagle and Mosquito parking area.1,5
The same guide puts the drive at about 23.5 miles of narrow, winding road after the turn onto Mineral King Road from Highway 198. A 2009 day hiker made it in about 25 miles from Three Rivers.5,7
The first leg
You climb with the Eagle and Mosquito trail for the first stretch. One guide has a wooden bridge over Spring Creek at 0.3 mile, an easy rock crossing of Eagle Creek at 0.9 mile and the fork at 1.2 miles. The right branch goes to Eagle and Mosquito lakes, and the left is signed for White Chief Canyon.5
After the fork the trail is very steep for a short distance, then the grade eases at 1.7 miles where the canyon opens into a meadow. A hiker on a 2020 post puts the first camp at about three and a half miles.5,6
Terrain and difficulty
The Park Service rates the climb moderately strenuous. Guides give a trailhead of 7,830 feet, the mine at 9,636 and the bowl at 10,050, with 1,806 feet of gain to the mine and 2,220 to the bowl.1,5
The upper canyon has rock walls in white, orange, red, brown and gray, and its marble ground holds sinkholes, caves and mine shafts. Beyond the mine the trail fades to a faint, cairned track along the west wall.5,1
Quota at this entry point
- 2026 daily quota at White Chief (Mineral King), overnight: 25 people a day. Recreation.gov lists 25 people a day for White Chief, 20 of them reservable. The live daily calendar is closed until the 2027 window opens on November 28, 2026, so this is the division text, not a daily count.1
Rules specific to this entry point
The first allowed camp is White Chief Lake or Trails End, which the Park Service puts 4.1 miles from the trailhead. No campfires are allowed.2,1
This permit does not cover a first night at Eagle Lake or the Mosquito Lakes. For those, choose the matching entry point.1
Overnight stock use is only for walking parties with burros or llamas.1
Where it leads
The White Chief mine was claimed by James Crabtree in 1873. The Park Service says his ruined cabin, near the meadow beyond the junction, may be the oldest standing structure in Mineral King. The Park Service gives 2.9 miles one way to the bowl, a steep but scenic climb up the west side of the valley.3
A guide puts the mine 3.7 miles from the trailhead and the bowl 4.6 miles, tucked under the west face of Vandever Mountain. Cross-country routes lead on to White Chief Lake, Ansel Lake and White Chief Peak, at 11,159 feet.5
A 2009 hiker went from Eagle Lake over a ridge to White Chief Peak, then down the lake outlet and talus to the White Chief trail. He called the summit a fine place to see Mineral King but not much of a peak.7
What trip reports say
A trip posted in March 2020 camped in the valley after a hike of about three and a half miles. The three friends spent a few hours looking at the snow caves and mines, and pitched tents behind a big rock near the creek.6
The next morning they climbed toward White Chief Lake, just under the summit near 10,000 feet, where the lake was still thawing and trout rose to flies. They went up the peak, crossed about half a mile of boulders along the ridge, and descended to Eagle Lake for the night.6
On the 2009 day hike the writer started at 7:30 a.m., took a short break at the Eagle Creek sinkhole, and logged the climb to the ridge as tedious class 2 boulder hopping where every other rock shifted. He guessed the full loop at 9 to 10 miles and 4,000 to 4,500 feet of gain.7
When to go from here
Mineral King Road closes for winter in mid-November, so the snow-free window is the realistic one. The March 2020 post found the lake near 10,000 feet frozen at first and thawing through the morning in early summer.4,6
Compare with nearby entry points
- Eagle Lake: Eagle Lake keeps right at the fork and camps at the lake, 3.4 miles out. White Chief goes left to a canyon with old workings, and its first camp is farther, at 4.1 miles.2,5
- Mosquito Lakes: Mosquito Lakes also keeps right and ends with cross-country travel to its upper lakes. White Chief has a maintained trail to its valley camp.1,2
- Sawtooth Pass: Sawtooth Pass is a separate trailhead, one mile past the ranger station, with a 20-person quota against White Chief's 25, and its first camp is Lower Monarch Lake at 4.2 miles.3,1,2
