Saganaga Lake (EP55): what makes it different

Saganaga Lake is the big-water entry at the end of the Gunflint Trail. It takes paddle and motor groups, 15 of each a day on Recreation.gov in 2026, and puts you on a lake of 7,000 acres or more with a border with Canada's Quetico Park. The motor limit is 25 horsepower east of American Point only.1,2,3,5

Getting to the start

The Forest Service lists EP55 in the Gunflint District as an overnight entry for paddle or motor. The limit is 25 horsepower except in paddle-only areas, and no motors may be used or carried west of American Point. The entry gives access to Canada.1,2

From Grand Marais, the Gunflint Trail runs about 55 miles to its end. There are two landings: one directly on Saganaga Lake, and one on Gull Lake about a mile southwest.3

The direct Saganaga landing is down Saganaga Lake Trail (County Road 11), the next right after the Chik-Wauk Museum road. Cook County runs the lot, which is very large and charges a fee. The sign looked cash only in fall 2022, and there is a restroom. Day permits are in a box on the far left of the entry sign.3

The Gull Lake landing is at the end of the trail next to Way of the Wilderness Canoe Outfitters, just north of Trail's End Campground. Parking is free in a massive lot that takes trailers, and there is a restroom and a boat ramp. Trail's End is a Forest Service campground for the night before.3

The first leg

From the Saganaga landing there is no portage. You paddle north, past a long dock on the right of the channel, which stays narrow for about 2.5 miles before it opens into the main lake.3

From Gull Lake you cross north to the northeast corner, then follow a short stretch of the Gull River to its mouth on Saganaga. It is just over 1.5 miles, about a mile longer than the direct landing. The western third of Gull Lake is in the BWCA, and motors are allowed on the rest.3

A 2011 PaddlingLight write-up of a 29-mile Sag and Sea Gull loop says the author prefers to start from the Gull Lake side of EP55, and calls the route finding easy and the portages rough.7

Terrain and difficulty

Saganaga covers 7,000 acres or more, making it one of the largest lakes in the BWCA, and sits at the northern end of the eastern side. Its islands and bays are confusing, so keep your position on the map.5,6

The lake is large and gets rough in wind. Friends of the Boundary Waters says less experienced paddlers should take extra care on the open stretches. The 2007 Ham Lake Fire burned the eastern shoreline.6,3

Outfitters can motor you across the lake, which eases a windy crossing, and tow service to American Point is common on the western side.5,3

Quota at this entry point

  • 2026 daily quota at Saganaga Lake (EP55), overnight paddle: 15 groups a day. Fifteen was the most common daily total on the paddle division on Rec.gov across May to September 2026. BWCA Wild also lists a daily quota of 15.2,3
  • 2026 daily quota at Saganaga Lake (EP55), overnight motor: 15 groups a day. The motor division on Rec.gov also read 15 on most dates, with a few dates higher or lower. It is a separate quota from the paddle one; do not add them together.2

Rules specific to this entry point

A third division, Saganaga Lake Only (55A), is paddle only and requires you to camp every night on Saganaga, with day trips to other lakes allowed. It showed no daily quota on any date in the 2026 calendar, and BWCA Wild's entry table says it was not issuing permits as of 2022.2,4

Groups going on into Quetico Provincial Park must stop at the Canadian ranger station at Cache Bay on the west side of Saganaga. Recreation.gov lists Cache Bay for the nearby Quetico entries Knife, Man Chain, Falls Chain and Saganagons.3,2

Where it leads

Most paddlers head west toward Ottertrack Lake or the Ester Lake area. East, you can follow the Granite River along the border, and southwest some groups go through Red Rock Lake into recently burned country.3

Save the Boundary Waters points to granite-cliff campsites in the northeast corner overlooking Canada, Englishman Island, Silver Falls, and Swamp Lake and the Monument Portage on the way to Ottertrack. Saganaga Falls in the northeast is a good fishing spot.5

Friends of the Boundary Waters lists a two-day, 6-plus-mile paddle with no portages. It suggests sites just north of where the Seagull River widens into Saganaga for a first night.6

What trip reports say

PaddlingLight's 2011 loop report calls Saganaga one of the few motorized lakes in the BWCA, so expect boat traffic. It warns of waves on windy days and says a narrow hidden inlet to the Roy Lake portage bay is easy to miss and can lead you into Red Rock Bay.7

The same report says Red Rock Lake has several good campsites, the southernmost site in Red Rock Bay being a favorite. Alpine Lake's shoreline is burned.7

BWCA Wild last visited on September 4, 2022. It says the lake's quota is high, and that the lot is probably the last restroom with a door for several days.3

When to go from here

None of the sources names a best month. They agree on wind, though: Friends of the Boundary Waters says the lake can turn very rough, and PaddlingLight warns of waves on windy days.6,7

With 15 paddle and 15 motor groups a day and a large lake, expect boat traffic from motor groups, which PaddlingLight also warned about.2,7

Compare with nearby entry points

  • Seagull Lake (EP54): Seagull Lake (EP54) allows paddle or motor too, but the Forest Service sets a 10 horsepower limit and bans motors west of Three Mile Island. Saganaga allows 25 horsepower east of American Point.1
  • Larch Creek (EP80): Larch Creek (EP80) is a paddle-only creek entry off the same road, with 1 permit a day on Rec.gov against 15 paddle and 15 motor here.2,1

Rules every BWCAW entry point shares

  • From May 1 to September 30, any overnight trip and any motorized day trip needs a quota permit. From October 1 to April 30 a free self-issued permit covers you.8
  • Quota permits for the whole season go on sale at 9:00 a.m. Central on the last Wednesday in January, on Recreation.gov. You enter only on the date and at the entry point printed on the permit.8
  • Overnight fees are $16 per adult and $8 per youth, per trip, plus a $6 reservation fee and a $32 deposit at booking.8
  • At most nine people and four watercraft together, on the water, on portages and in camp. The permit holder or the named alternate collects it, with photo ID, on the entry date or the day before.8
